Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT Dating violence among higher education students emerges as the theme of the present dissertation. Its main objective is to identify the possible existence of a correlation between attitudes related to love and attitudes towards dating violence, as well as study possible differences in those attitudes depending on the influence of sociodemographic/contextual variables, in students attending mainly the 1st year of all the courses held in one higher education institution in Lisbon. This empirical study adopts a quantitative methodology, using a questionnaire that included sociodemographic/contextual measures and two scales, specifically the “Escala de atitudes em relação ao amor” (Love Attitudes Scale) (Neto, 1992) and the “Escala de atitudes acerca da violência no namoro” (Attitudes Towards Dating Violence Scale) (Saavedra, Machado & Martins, 2017), in a sample of 210 students. The results obtained in this study suggest that most of the participants identify themselves more with the friendship (Storge), passionate (Eros) and altruistic (Ágape) love styles and show a low level of acceptance regarding dating violence, being that male students are more accepting than female students. Nevertheless, it is possible to identify some acceptance of female psychological and physical violence along with male psychological violence. It is also possible to perceive that the variables sex, type of course, religiosity and person who one is thinking about whilst answering the questionnaire, influence the attitudes of the participants towards dating violence. In addition the variables sex, sexual orientation, marital status, experience in love relationships, person who one is thinking about whilst completing the questionnaire and duration of the relationship, influence their attitudes towards love. Lastly, the results suggested that the distinct subscales regarding the Attitudes Towards Dating Violence Scale are intercorrelated, as well as the existence of a relationship between certain dating violence supportive attitudes and some attitudes towards love, with the exception of friendship love style (Storge) which manifests itself as neutral in this specific aspect.
