Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT This report comes under the Supervised Teaching Curricular Unit Practice II, part of the Master’s in Teaching 1st Cycle of Basic Education (CBE) and Mathematics and Natural Sciences in the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education. This report is supported by two structuring chapters, in the first, it refers to the pedagogical practice developed in the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education and, in a second part, to the research that would be applied in the 1st CBE. The supervised practice teaching of the 2nd CBE was developed in two classes (6th grade), in a public school in Lisbon. Due to the conditions imposed by the current situation of COVID-19, the supervised practice teaching of the 1st CBE was never accomplished. In this last part, the study “The impact of meditation on the attention and on the ability to memorize in students of the 1st CBE” is presented with the problematic “What influence do meditation exercises have on the concentration of attention and on the ability to memorize in students of the 1st CBE?”. By looking at meditation as a learning tool, and taking into account the importance of these skills, it was intended to understand whether meditation practice would have any impact on their development. So the main purpose is “to check whether participation in meditation exercises for 5 minutes a day has an influence on the concentrative attention capacity and memory capacity, measured in two specific tests for this purpose”. These tests would be applied to two distinct groups (intervention group and control group) at the beginning and end of the intervention. For a later comparison of the results only one of these groups would perform the meditation exercises. A Focus Group would also be carried out with the intervention group in order to “analyse the students' perceptions of the experience of meditation practice”. For the analysis of the results the following parametric test - T test - would be used, through the software "Statistical Package for the Social Sciences" (SPSS).
