- Business to Business (B2B): Beyond Business CommunicationPublication . Raposo, Ana Luísa Canelas Rasquilho; Gonçalves,MartaToo often when speaking about communication management, it is not made the distinction between the action in Business-to-Consumer (B2C) or Business-to-Business (B2B) companies. Nevertheless, although in both business models the strategic communication management process should be focused on building a strong reputation, in the case of B2B companies investing in detailed stakeholder relationship management is crucial, in order to reach trust and long term interactions. For this reason many authors consider the B2B Communication as an emergent and essential research object within Public Relations/Corporate Communication (Coulon & Eloy, 2018; Yaxley, 2013; Theaker, 2004). As Cornelissen (2004) pointed out, the Business-to-business (B2B) model can be defined "as relating to the sale of a product for any use other than personal consumption. The buyer may be a manufacturer, a reseller, a government body, a non-profit-making institution or any organisation other than an ultimate consumer" (in Tench e Yeomans, 2017:432). The option for studying B2B companies wasn't innocent. There are thousands of businesses with this profile, having a huge contribution to the economies, namely in Portugal. The activity of these companies is the starting point of a large number of supply chains that underpin well-know big brands with whom we get used to live as final consumers. However, these companies work in the "backstage" of the value creation process. This paper has as its main purpose to defend, upon a theoretical reflection and departing from an empirical exploratory study, that the communication management within B2B companies should be understood as more than "business communication". A convergent parallel mixed methods approach was developed. In terms of data collection, 124 B2B portuguese companies answered an online survey and 32 interviews were conducted. Content analyses was the method chosen to organise and present the data. If up to now, for the majority of the B2B companies interviewed the communication function seems to be understood as a tool to support the commercial activities, focused on products/services promotion, things are changing. The results pointed out an urgent need to look in a different way at the Public Relations / Corporate Communications investments. Companies declared that in order to be more competitive in this new "normal" it is needed to anticipate and implement news solutions that go beyond "business communication".
- Risk communication: between probabilities and perceptionsPublication . Payne, Gregory; Eiró-Gomes, MafaldaA thorethical approach to the concept of risk communication will be presented in an intertwitened dialogue with the present pandemic situation and the work that has been developed by differente international and national institutions and governments. Both in philosophy and sociology, as well as in communication sciences the serlian concept of “Brackground” (Searle, 1992, 1997) has been highly discussed and developed. Maybe it hasn’t gained such a pivotal importance as when we are discussing the way governments have communicated (or have they only informed?) to, for or with their publics during the Covid-19 pandemic crisis. If it is true that a risk is a probability it has been defended for many years that it is also a perception. Between the experts and the public there is a gap that only “communication” might help to overcome. Have we managed to understand our publics in all their complexities, have we worked within worldviews, identities and values of those whose behaviours we wanted to change? Or have we on both sides of the Atlantic misunderstood the role of risk and crisis communication in all the process? Departing from concrete examples and perplexities concerning the present situation researchers will offer an overview of some of the main themes and issues concerning how risk is, or ought to be, communicated in the context of the communication in the public interest.
- Risk communication (SARS-CoV-2) and the Portuguese primary healthcare servicesPublication .
- European Parliament and SARS-Cov2 risk communication- some remarksPublication . Ferreira, João; Eiró-Gomes, MafaldaCommunication has always proved to be an important weapon against misinformation and perceived inertia. Nowadays, the role of communication has taken on a new meaning when we consider its importance in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic that we have been facing for the last year and a half. On the other hand, this importance is leveraged when we talk about European institutions that have the decision-making power about the policies adopted in the member states and the funds they have available to fight this monumental adversity. It is the aim of this work to understand and analyze the way in which Portuguese Members European Parliament have communicated with their Portuguese constituents in order to combat the misinformation felt at a complicated time when it is imperative that there is widespread knowledge of the policies that will be adopted and how they deal with the situation being experienced. Thus, we will analyze their action since March 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic started in Europe, until August of the same year, the end of the first big wave.
- SARS-CoV-2 and the children: some remarks on risk communicationPublication . Casimiro, Inês; Eiró-Gomes, MafaldaChildren tend to be a forgotten public, a lot of times, communication for children is barely done, although it is very common to communicate for their families and other caregivers topics that concern the children. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has been all over the news and every other kind of communication in the last year and it affects directly every individual in the society, including children. However, it almost hasn’t been communicated to children, which is a topic of concern, being that risk communication is crucial in this case. So, this paper allows oneself to have a look at the risk communication made in Portugal that had children as the main target audience. Risk communication allows the dissemination of information that affects the public, it diminishes the damage to the organizations and also allows the stakeholders to keep their confidence and relationship with the organization. This way, the role of PR professionals is to respond to a crisis analyzing the most ideal time, response priorities, messages and their channels and media, as well as what are the main and secondary target audiences. We’re answering the question “How did the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus communicated to children between 3 and 12 years old by the governmental organizations and other institutions in Portugal?”, by analyzing information collected during the first wage of the pandemic, in march and april 2020. The data collected was then analyzed using a categorical thematic analysis.
