- A pseudorotaxane formed from a cucurbit[7]uril wheel and a bioinspired molecular axle with pH, light and redox-responsive propertiesPublication . Seco, André; Diniz, Ana Marta; Sarrato, João; Mourão, Henrique; Cruz, Hugo; Parola, A. Jorge; Basílio, NunoA pH-, light- and redox-responsive flavylium-bipyridinium molecular dyad (bioinspired in natural anthocyanins) were synthesized and employed to devise a pseudorotaxane with the macrocycle cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) in aqueous solution. The inclusion complex was characterized by UV-Vis absorption, fluorescence emission, NMR, and electrochemical techniques which demonstrate the formation of a stable binary complex between the dyad and CB7 both under acidic and neutral conditions. It is noteworthy that the flavylium-bipyridinium tricationic dyad is only stable in highly acidic media, undergoing a reversible hydration reaction at slightly acidic or neutral pH to give a trans-chalcone-bipyridinium dication. 1H NMR experiments showed that in this last species the CB7 binds to the bipyridinium unit while in the tricationic species the macrocycle is positioned between the flavylium and the bipyridinium moieties. The different location of the CB7 wheel in the two dyad states allows control of the shuttling movement using light and pH stimuli that trigger the interconversion between these two species.
- Gender differences on labour issues in hotel industry in the Algarve, Portugal: The perceptions of employees from two business groupsPublication . Seabra, Fernando Miguel; Contreiras, Joaquim Pinto; Duarte, PatriciaThis research sought to analyse gender differences in perceptions about labour issues hold by female and male employees of hotel companies, a male-dominant working environment (Burguess, 2003; Ng & Pine, 2003). Issues such as job insecurity, organisational justice, work- family interface, career opportunities and leadership are addressed in this study. The preliminary findings suggest that man and women have different perceptions on work- family balance (with women reporting higher conflict between the two life domains), and leadership (with women considering more than men do not like to have a woman as their leader). Perceptions on job insecurity and organisational justice seem similar between groups.

Based on the data presented on overdiagnosis, and on prior Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease (BOLD) observations on underdiagnosis,3 we truly believe that our worldwide community of pulmonary specialists could do much better in caring for this extremely prevalent and devastating disease. Overall, our data indicate that for one patient with a “matched” COPD diagnosis (ie, the presence of postbronchodilator airway obstruction and a positive recall of such a diagnosis), there is always another “mismatched,” false-positive patient with COPD. This patient possibly experiences all the untoward consequences, such as receiving expensive and possibly harmful medication, and missing chances for treatment of cardiac disease or asthma. On the contrary, for each “known” patient with COPD who has a poorly reversible airway obstruction, there are four to five other patients out there with yet undetected airways obstruction. Again, we are missing opportunities in these patients for smoking intervention, symptom relief, and prolongation of their lives.
- Surveillance of mucorales resistance to azoles in the waste sorting industry: assessment of filtering respiratory protective devices and glovesPublication . Aranha Caetano, Liliana; Dias, M.; Almeida, Beatriz; Viegas, CarlaThe use of filtering respiratory protective devices (FRPD) and gloves is mandatory in the waste-sorting industry in Portugal as preventive of workers’ exposure to bioaerosols, including fungi. Mucorales order includes a large number of ubiquitous saprophytes species that can cause severe infections, such as mucormycosis, which is associated with a great deal of morbidity. The emergence of resistance to azoles among fungal species, including Mucorales, in the environmental challenges the management of severe fungal infections. The aim of this study was to assess the Mucorales burden retained by filtering respiratory protective devices (FRPD) (interior layer and exhalation valves) and present in gloves used in the waste sorting industry and to screen the resistance of Mucorales to azole-drugs in this occupational environment.
- Comparison of static models in optimization of the determinants of the Portuguese SME capital structurePublication . Lourenco, Antonio; Mata, Mário Nuno; Arsénio, TiagoPurpose: This research aims to study the determinants of Portuguese companies’ capital structure. These results can be useful: 1) as guidelines for capital structure optimization and 2) as a support for efficient decisions in what concerns to capital structure. The literature shows that classical determinants of capital structure present statistical significance and pursue the expected sign for different econometric models tested. Method: The study follows a quantitative design research, with data collected in Amadeus from 500 SME`S in Portugal. The data spans from 2009 to 2018 totaling 4500 observations. We consider three dependent variables, i.e., total, medium and long term and short-term debt. In addition, we also employ seven independent variables (dimension; growth; liquidity; profitability; tangibility; profitability and business risk and singularity). We used a panel data approach based on fixed effects (FE) and of random effects models (RE). Findings: We found that there is no significant divergence of the experimental results obtained in the OLS model, with the fixed effects model and the random effects model, and the expected signals for some independent variables are generally the hypotheses formulated. If we compared both econometric models, it is verified that regardless of the model used, or of the dependent variable analyzed, some of the independent variables are statistically significant in all analyzed models. Furthermore, we also found evidence that the same expected signals are in agreement with the standard financial theory. These empirical findings may suggest good indicators for making more efficient decisions about the determinants of the capital structure. Research limitations/implications: The main contribution of this work is mainly in which econometric models had best results (according to existing theories) to analyse capital structures of companies. We found that the econometric model chosen for the analysis of the variables must be analysed insofar as some of the independent variables are sensitive to the expected signal and statistical significance, depending on the selected model. Practical implications: These findings will be very useful to top managers in the process of deciding the optimal structure of capital without neglecting the long run financial sustainability of the companies. Originality/value: This study is different because go beyond the classical capital structure determinants and also shows a comparison between different econometric models.
