- Artistic project report: comparison of the revised editions and perspective on the interpretationPublication . Radocaj, Milan; Barsegian, Samuel; Pacheco, PauloABSTRACT - Making a part of my final recital, I decided to include Bartók’s Viola Concerto in my artistic project as one of the most performed, recorded, and important pieces in the viola repertoire. Still, it’s a mystery in terms of compositional identity. The main topic that I will research is focused on the different editions of Bartók’s Viola Concerto. To comprehend the composer’s aesthetics, this work will cover his historical background, some of his works and related aspects of his musical language. Nowadays, one of the most known Viola Concertos and also considered one of the masterpieces of the Hungarian composer has the particularity of being an unfinished work: Bartók’s last composition left only fourteen pages of manuscript and sketches. From this point, too many questions stayed unanswered and for the interpreter it becomes difficult to be aware of Bartók’s intentions. The Concerto has several editions, published and unpublished. They show differences among them on such issues as bowings, dynamics, and even added and deleted measures and notes. The main objective of this work is the analysis of those editions with a focus on Peter Bartók’s version (his son), Tibor Serly’s version, and the manuscript itself. I believe that this project will help me a lot in music interpretation, during the process and in its final stage, especially in getting a clearer idea of what Bartók wanted to put in his work. I also believe this work could reach a larger audience in the “viola world” and may provide an interesting critical reflection on the viola players.
