Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT - Introduction: Hearing loss is a serious public health problem that can have physical, mental, and social consequences for those affected as well as for the closest family members and/or people who related to them. Hearing devices, such as hearing aids or amplifiers, can be useful to ease the hearing, communication, and social life of adults with hearing loss. Currently, there are several options in the Portuguese market that have the potential to substantially improve the accessibility and availability of hearing health services. However, some of these devices, which are less expensive and easier to acquire, may have some limitations, as many devices may not meet the strict electroacoustic criteria that are necessary for successful hearing rehabilitation. Objective: To study the listening support systems and their suitability for use by the hearing impaired, in Portugal. Methods: Mixed approach, being qualitative at an early stage where it was possible to describe the hearing aid market, subsequently, in a quantitative approach that materialized in the fulfillment of an online questionnaire addressed to Audiologists who worked in hearing rehabilitation in Portugal having obtained a sample of 163 participants. Results: There is an extensive market for hearing aids and amplifiers in Portugal, however, it was realized that Portuguese Audiologists have a preference for 4 brands of hearing aids. Conclusion: Hearing aids greatly improve the quality of life of the population with hearing loss, the results obtained allow a mapping of the hearing aids market in Portugal and the identification of the most used/preferred brands of Portuguese Audiologists.
