ABSTRACT - Introduction: There was an infodemic associated with the COVID-19 pandemic – an excess of information, some accurate and some not, which makes it difficult to find reputable sources and reliable guidance when needed. Health Literacy is the ability to access, understand, assess, and apply health information, making it crucial to interpreting all information about COVID-19. This study aims to evaluate the levels of Health Literacy of Portuguese adults, with regard to COVID-19, and its relationship with the infodemic. Methodology: The study is observational, cross-sectional, and analytical with a quantitative approach and the non-probabilistic sample is composed of 105 individuals. An online questionnaire was launched - HLS-COVID-Q22. Results: In the sample, 100% of the individuals presented sufficient Health Literacy on COVID-19, and all the tasks addressed in the HLS-COVID-Q22 were considered easy or very easy for most individuals (mean=3.36). Most individuals (71.4%) felt well informed about COVID-19, and also a large part of individuals (51.4%) did not feel confused at all with all the information about COVID-19. Although the level of Health Literacy on COVID-19 is high, and the results of this investigation have been generally favorable, there is still a need to promote Health Literacy for the Portuguese population to know how to live in an infodemic, identify misinformation and make decisions based on scientific evidence. Conclusion: It is therefore considered essential and urgent to design and implement a National Health Literacy Strategy during crises, and to implement an effective and reliable communication system.
