Abstract(s)
Desta lacuna surgiu o objectivo primordial do projecto.
ABSTRACT - This project aims to disclose part of the musical work for voice and piano by Charles-Marie Widor through the review and performance of the song cycle Chansons de Mer, with words by Paul Bourget. Charles-Marie W idor (1844-1937) became famous for his organ pieces, but he also composed nearly a hundred songs, virtually unknown. Paul Bourget (1852-1935), writer, essayist and dramaturge, was noted for his charisma and influence. The lack of musical and poetical information upon the cycle Chansons de Mer, from which only one complete recording is known, is intriguing and stimulating. From this gap emerges the main purpose of the project. The starting point will be the historical context of cultural life in France at the turning of the century and the biographical portraits from Widor and Bourget, supported by the existing bibliography and recording. This approach will enable the necessary knowledge to get acquainted with Widor’s environment by the time this song cycle was composed, and to start a poetical and musical interpretation of the work, beginning with the translation of the songs. The project will be concluded with the cycle’s performance. Widor reveals here a demanding and daring writing. His elaborated structure and musical drama grant the cycle an unusual dimension, when comparing it with french vocal music at that time, but which goes perfectly well with W idor’s music.
