Abstract(s)
instrumento (1º, 2º e 3º anos do ensino secundário) e três turmas do ensino especializado (4º,
5º e 7º graus), num total de 53 alunos. A parte do projecto que envolveu alunos durou três
meses.
As
ABSTRACT - The present written work is a final report of an artistic project of pedagogical aims. It was based on traditional music from the Island of Madeira and developed at the Conservatório – Escola das Artes da Madeira, Eng.º Luíz Peter Clode (CEPAM), in the subject classes of Musicianship. The project involved three classes of the professional courses (Secondary School level including the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades of the instrumentalist professional course) and another three classes of students of the local conservatoire (Junior High School level including the 4th, 5th and 7th grades of specialized music teaching), in a total of 53 students. The implementation of the project lasted three months. Specialized Music Teaching, in a music school, normally deals exclusively with the classical music repertoire. Using a musical genre that is not classical – in this case, the traditional music from the island - planning several lessons with the goal of promoting students’ performances of traditional music arranged for pedagogical purposes and according to each group specifications, was the modus operandi. This was a pedagogical trend not yet developed in Madeira and that justified the research procedures followed to validate and evaluate what was being done. Using the local traditional music as our main repertoire in the classes and giving public performances, with vocal and instrumental groups, allowed students to develop their musical skills, achieving the goals set in the subject of Musicianship (including ear training and music theory). Besides improving their musical skills, as set on the school curriculae, they learned, sung and played traditional music from the island and became more aware of their regional identity and more familiar with the local history and musical heritage. A selection of folksongs of the local traditional repertoire, arrangements, orchestrations and teaching materials were produced taking in account the students and the classes characteristics and technical levels. Teaching and performing the local traditional music allowed students to build up their regional identity, cherishing it, and hopefully, transmitting it and holding on to it.
