Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT - This thesis focuses on the thought and research components that were necessary for the Onanismos performance, along with the procedural and creative processes that were part of it, namely constructing based on the refusal of narrative, the importance of action and the focus given to the plasticity of the performance. Onanismos was a performance that took place in Lavadouro de Carnide, that stemmed from the need to tackle censorship and homosexual discrimination. Particularly artistic censorship exercised upon homoerotic or homoaffective works in Portugal, at the turn of the 20th century. It serves as an inquiry and exploration of how a “portuguese closet”, as mentioned by Klobucka, was created and constructed and reflects on the movement from a conservative mindset to creative artistic censorship. What’s the impact of artistic censorship and how fundamental can this be in terms of social thinking as well as queer artistic conception.
