Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT - The current study, based on the problem of noise was developed with the intent to understand its impact in the quality of life of Intensive Care Units staff. For the purpose of this study, was used a sample population of 40 nurses from two different Intensive Care Units in Lisbon area. The project was based on a quantitative, descriptive and exploratory study and had the goal of determining whether there was an impact in the quality of life of the nurses due to the exposure to high levels of noise in their work place. A survey, divided in two main parts, was used as an instrument for data collection. One part about the quality of life using the WHOQOL-Bref method and a second part related to the noise and its influence in the individual and professional experience of the Intensive Care nurses. SPSS version 17.0 was the selected tool for data analysis. The sample consisted in its majority of population of the feminine sex (74,4%). All the surveyed individuals reported some level of noise in their workplace, with the large majority considering these noise levels excessive (64,1%), thus recognising the importance of this factor in their health and well-being as well as the direct impact in their quality of life. It is worth noting that 61,4% of the people alluded to the presence of alarms in their dreams and the fact they experienced increased levels of stress and anxiety in the presence of noise. The results obtained using the WHOQOL-Bref method show levels beyond the neutral point with a tendency to positive valuation resulting in a satisfactory quality of life, ie, litle or no negative impact in terms of quality of life. However, in the correlation of the domains with the noise was evident that nurses have a reduction in their quality of life when the noise is present.
