Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The present dissertation aims to address the professional conduct of journalists in the coverage of events involving the death of public figures, having as a specific case study the passing of Sara Carreira, daughter of the popular Portuguese singer Tony Carreira, who was victimized by a car accident on December 5th 2020. Based on the analysis of the coverage of the Portuguese media in the period immediately after the event, the results indicate that the most frequent ethical- deontological concern is regarding the sensationalist treatment of information, namely the exaggeration or misrepresentation of a given news content in order to attract audiences. Regarding the behavior of the analyzed media organizations, tabloid newspapers and private stations were the ones that least abided by the rules of professional conduct. In a broader sense, our research allowed us to realize that there is still a journalistic tendency of not respecting the privacy of people in situations of mourning, a behavior that intensifies especially when we are dealing with more mediatized figures. Nevertheless, the consumption of this kind of content by the public has not decreased (on the contrary), since it continues to show an enormous curiosity for the impact that such a disruptive event has in the popular imaginary.
