Abstract - An Act for Jerusalem gives its name to an opera created by this Master’s degree student, by turn based on the homonymous theatrical play by Mário Cesariny de Vasconcelos, one of those responsible for the arrival of surrealism in Portugal. The original play was published in 1964 and was banned by the authoritarian regime which then ruled that country, being considered a protest play based upon the principle of satire, one of the essential elements of surrealist aesthetics – this way, Cesariny could criticise that time’s regime without mentioning it directly by writing a plot set in Antiquity and in a distant region. This work departs from the elaboration of the opera’s full score and expands itself into a commentary on current affairs which have not changed much since the publication of the original play and the historical timeline of the plot, reflecting as well on the role of Art as an instrument of questioning the society in which we live today and also on the issue of timelessness, which is of paramount importance to define the course of Humanity as it exists nowadays and how the present, shaped from the past, can influence the future at all levels.
