Abstract - The present work results from the internship carried out and implemented during the 2024/2025 academic year in the Contemporary Dance Technique course at Orfeão de Leiria – Conservatório de Artes (OLCA), with students of the 5th year of the Specialized Artistic Education in Dance. This internship focused on an exploratory study of the application of six Pilates method exercises, aimed at strengthening and mobilising the torso in order to enhance the execution of the Arabesque. The aim was to understand how specific work on the body centre could contribute to the improvement of Contemporary Dance Technique, taking the Arabesque as a paradigmatic example. This movement, which simultaneously requires stability, alignment and expansion, depends on the conscious activation of the centre, whose preparation, through Pilates exercises, enhances both technical precision and artistic expressiveness. The research was based on a careful selection of matwork exercises, favouring their applicability in a school context without the need for additional equipment. The study was supported by a literature review and the direct observation of the pedagogical process, allowing an analysis of the relevance of the Pilates method as a complementary tool in the technical and expressive development of dance. The methodology adopted in this study was action research, due to its relevance in the pedagogical context and the possibility of continuously observing, intervening, reflecting and readjusting practice. Data collection was based on logbooks, visual records and observation charts, allowing for a detailed analysis of the students’ progress throughout the internship. The main objective of the work developed was to promote greater body awareness, ensuring a more precise placement of the lower limbs and a controlled elevation of the leg in the Arabesque. It also sought to reduce imbalances and reinforce core activation, enhancing technical improvements and enabling a more fluid and efficient execution of the movement through increased torso strength and mobility.
