Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT - The transfusion of blood components is generally a safe therapy, widely used in clinical hospital practice, but not entirely exempt from the occurrence of Adverse Reactions to Transfusion. To identify and characterize the most frequent adverse transfusion reactions in Portugal, between the years 2017 and 2021, a descriptive observational study of the adverse transfusion reactions that occurred in Portugal during this period was carried out, through the analysis of the Annual Transfusion Activity Reports of the Portuguese Hemovigilance System. The population of this study corresponded to the universe of Blood Services and Transfusion Medicine Services, Blood Services, Transfusion Medicine Services, and Transfusion Points registered in the database of the Portuguese Hemovigilance System, which notified Adverse Reactions to Transfusion. During the study period, 1695 Adverse Reactions to Transfusion were reported, with most notifications occurring in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo Region. From the results obtained, it was verified that the non-hemolytic febrile reaction was the most reported reaction, with erythrocyte concentrates being the blood component responsible for the highest number of reactions. Concerning severity, it was found that 1490 of the reported reactions were considered non-serious and that the age group in which the highest number of reactions occurred is in patients aged over 50 years. The results obtained allowed us to conclude that the awareness of professionals involved in the transfusion chain to the importance of correct compliance with norms and procedures for continuous improvement is essential to reduce the occurrence of adverse transfusion reactions.
