Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The journalistic practice is pressured by the mercantile logic of the company that owns the media outlet, especially when it comes to the financial sustainability of private companies. In cultural journalism, the disinvestment in reportage and cultural criticism reflects journalism’s growing incapacity of promoting debate around culture. The initial goal was to analyze SIC’s coverage of cinema and theatre. However, two major events at the beginning of 2022 brought new directions to the investigation – and a new pertinence. The first one was of internal nature, when the newsroom suffered a brutal cyber-attack on January 3rd. The second event was external, regarding the invasion of Ukraine on February 24th, with irreversible repercussions on world geopolitics. This atypical conjuncture had never been experienced nor studied academically, creating the opportunity for a pioneering case study in the field of cultural journalism. The present work portrays the internship experience from January 31st to June 30th, coincident with this new reality. The methodological strategy is documentary (literature review on cultural journalism and content analysis of 181 news lineups from the newscast Primeiro Jornal) and non-documentary (exploratory interviews with SIC professionals and participant observation). The research shows how the coverage of cinema and theatre adapted to the rigid monothematic agenda imposed by the war conflict and the mobilization of the newsroom professionals to face the technical obstacles caused by the cyberattack.
