Abstract(s)

Aquaponics which integrates hydroponic farming and aquaculturein a low input systemway of production, is an agricultural way of production recognized as innovative and sustainable by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.Despite this aquaponics has yet to achieve commercial success around the world. However, aquaponics is experiencing a period of rapid interest byresearchers, public decision-makers, farmers and new generation of entrepreneurs. In Europe, the first start-ups are just taking the first steps of industrial production. The COST Action FA 1305 allowed the development of a European Hub of aquaponics in European countries. Israel developin this Hub a strong record of publications and network as well as Portugal. In this last country the coverage of aquaponics by the media and broadcast has been intensive, as well as the scientific and public debate stimulated by the field. However, the socio-economic and institutional problems concerning to the commercial development of Portuguese aquaponics products remains unsolved. Onthe other hand, in Israel the majority of consumers don’t Know yet aquaponics. This study tries to overcome these gap sand offers recommendations on how to promote the development of commercial aquaponics in Portugal and in Israel in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals(SDG)1 and SDG8of the2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States. The methods include the qualitative analysis of reviewed literature mainly in Portugal and Israel. In Portugal, the results confirm problems at an institutional level that difficult the development of aquaponics in the Portuguese market. Yet, results seem to indicate that local decision-makers, entrepreneurs and few young farmers are very motivated to develop aquaponics in the Portuguese market. In Israel commercial aquaponics is restricted by insufficient economic development. But Israeli consumers are willing to pay a premium for aquaponic produce. Assessing aquaponics price sensitivity depends on both culture and product. Therefore, we recommend more attention from public decision-makers to solve the main institutional restrictions of this innovative and sustainable activity in Portugal and the development of more strong studies on economics field of aquaponics in Israel to promote the commercial development of this sustainable way of productionand to achieve the SDGs
