Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT - This essay will refer to the way Portuguese theatre developed throughout the twentieth century, focusing on the portrayal of some of William Shakespeare’s characters by Portuguese actors. In order to do that, I will consider not only the role of the actor in a specific theatre structure but also the significance of Shakespeare’s presence in the repertoire of different theatre groups - with different artistic interests. I will give examples of some performances that are representative of several moments and varied currents in the Portuguese theatre, thus raising the hypothesis that we can perceive in the way Shakespearean characters were impersonated some of the ways in which theatre in Portugal has been developing.
