Abstract(s)
The evolution of operations management has been shaped by successive technical and cultural transformations throughout history, from the implementation of the assembly line, through World War II and the oil crisis of the 1970s, to the emergence of information technology. The operational methodologies developed by the Japanese for the production of Toyota cars, based on the foundations established by the West, played a key role in the global transformation of operational management. Gradually their importance increased due to the competitive advantages it provided, motivating large organizations to adopt their methods, previously confined to the manufacturing environment. They continue to evolve today due to a major boost from information technology, which renew and rejuvenate proven old concepts and bring them into today's world through digital platforms. This paper aims to study the advantages, disadvantages and challenges of implementing the Lean management methodology in the Portuguese business sector, through a real case, focusing on some of its theoretical concepts and, more practically, on the adaptation of Toyota's Kanban system to operational functions using a digital platform.
