Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT - Due to the rapid and severe spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the adoption of non-pharmacological control measures to prevent infection, such as the use of masks and social distancing, has been necessary. Adherence to such measures is fundamental, since nowadays, the number of new cases of infection remains high, even though the majority of the world’s population has already been vaccinated. Firefighters, as Civil Protection agents, have very close contact with society, dealing with many people, mainly fragile from a health point of view, so the maintenance of these prevention measures is pertinent. The purpose of this study was to identify which factors related to the adherence to the use of mask and social distancing are more relevant, through a survey, of adherence to the use of masks and social distancing for the prevention of infection by SARS-CoV-2, in the population of volunteer firefighters in Greater Lisbon. For this study, volunteer firefighters were recruited from the fire stations of Amadora, Camarate, and Queluz. Sixty-six volunteer firefighters participated in the survey, most were male, and the average age was 34 years old. Actually, the permanence of the use of a mask during the exercise of functions is moderate, while the frequency of the use of social distancing during the exercise of functions is low. The main reasons for adhering to the use of masks and social distancing were the possibility to perform the functions of a Volunteer Firefighter and the protection of family members at risk. The results obtained may contribute to serving as a basis for possible strategies and/or awareness-raising actions directed to volunteer firefighters, emphasizing the importance of maintaining non-pharmacological preventive measures and thus being able to avoid contagions, regardless of the development of the COVID-19 disease.
