Abstract(s)
The report was prepared within the scope of the curricular unit of Supervised Professional Practice II (PPS II), which took place in a kindergarten room, with 20 children aged between 2 and 6 years. This report presents the work developed in PPS II, including the characterization of the educational context, the educational intentions, the investigation of a problem that arose in PPS II and a reflection on the construction of professionality. During PPS II, the importance of the organization of space and materials in promoting children's autonomy was highlighted, and research around this relationship emerged in the context of the pedagogical model of the Modern School Movement (MEM). The study sought: (i) to identify the strategies used by the kindergarten teacher to promote children's autonomy through the organization of the educational environment in a kindergarten with the MEM pedagogical model; (ii) map the children's participation in the organization of the classroom space; (iii) to analyze the influence of children's participation in the organization of the activity room space on the development of their autonomy; and (iv) to analyze how the organization and arrangement of materials in the activity room of a kindergarten with the MEM pedagogical model influence the children's ability to make decisions autonomously. A qualitative research was carried out and follows the case study method. The data collected were recorded in field notes, in an open questionnaire carried out to the cooperating educator and through some visual narratives. The analysis of the results shows that, when the space is well organized and the materials are accessible, children feel safer and more confident to make decisions. Thus, it was found that the strategies of the kindergarten teacher and the involvement of the children in the organization of the space and materials contributed to the development of their autonomy.
