Ao longo dos últimos anos têm ocorrido acontecimentos que afetaram a reputação do setor bancário e consequentemente afetaram a confiança que a população tem nas instituições bancárias. Algumas dessas ocorrências incluem crises financeiras e escândalos relacionados com fraude ou suspeitas de fraude financeira. Estes incidentes realmente afetam a boa perceção que alguns cidadãos poderiam ter sobre o setor bancário, mas, na presente dissertação, é exposta a ideia, introduzida por Alexis de Tocqueville no século XIX, de que a confiança geral entre a população tem diminuído ao longo dos anos pela falta de espírito associativo na sociedade e o rápido aumento do individualismo. Sem confiança não existiriam instituições financeiras e sem instituições financeiras a sociedade não funcionaria tão bem como funciona. Este cenário de um mundo sem bancos levaria a um menor crescimento económico pela diminuição do consumo e do investimento e afetaria o desenvolvimento económico visto que colocaria em causa o bem-estar da população. Dada a importância da confiança para o setor bancário, cabe às instituições que nele atuam o papel de reforçar as relações de confiança entre os intervenientes do referido setor. Estas medidas são expostas na presente dissertação bem como uma indicação das medidas que efetivamente são tomadas pelos bancos e instituições de regulação e supervisão portuguesas e alguns exemplos europeus.
During the last couple of decades there have been some events that affected the financial sector’s reputation which also affected the trust that the population in general had in the financial institutions. Some of those incidents include a couple of financial crises and some financial scandals related to fraud or suspected fraud. Those events did actually affect the perception that some people had about the financial sector, however, this dissertation exposes the idea, introduced by Alexis de Tocqueville, that the general level of trust in society has been declining due to the lack of associative spirit and the rise of individualism. Without trust the financial institutions would not exist and without financial institutions society would not work as well as it does. This scenario of a world without financial institutions would lead to a slower economic growth due to the decline of investments and the decline of family consumption and would also affect the economic development on account of the decline of the general well-being of the population. Given the importance of trust to the financial sector, the role of improving the trust relations between the parties involved in the referred sector is up to the financial institutions. This dissertation exposes the ways that the financial institutions and the financial regulatory institutions could improve the trust relations within the financial sector.
