Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT - To provide safe, efficient, and high-quality health care, the health sector is characterized by constant reforms and updates. For these to occur, effective leadership is needed to guide and drive their human resources. There are few studies in Health Technologies regarding the perception of leadership styles. Although there is no right style, transformational leadership has been pointed out as an asset, especially in sectors as demanding as health. To investigate the leadership styles perceived by the Managers of the Pathological Anatomy Laboratories in Mainland Portugal, a quantitative study was carried out applying the Multifactorial Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) and the statistical tests t of student and One-way ANOVA (alpha=0.05). Despite the higher results associated with transformational leadership, followed by transactional leadership, there was no statistical relevance for the sample of 27 subjects (90% of the population). With significance, we found higher values for women in the domain of management by passive exception of the laissez-faire style; lower leadership results in the age group between 50 and 59 years; superiority of subjects with Master's degree in the dimension of intellectual stimulus and those who practice the profession between 10 and 29 years, in the individualized consideration dimension, both of transformational leadership. Although without significant influence of individual characteristics in the perception of the different leadership styles by the Managers, a certain transformational trend may suggest that it is now appropriate to give training a relevant role in the consolidation of this style soon.
