Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT - The Sonata in B minor by Franz Liszt and the Piano Sonata op.1 by Alan Berg are unique works in the piano repertoire. Despite being written within different contexts and periods, both were innovative in regard to harmony and compositional technique, with the sonata form as a starting point. In the present work, a brief analysis of the two sonatas is presented, and the compositional techniques used towards a greater formal unity discussed. These are thematic transformation in Liszt’s case e developing variation in Berg’s. Both stem from the use, development or variation of a limited number of motifs. Besides framing each work in its historical context, a comparison is made exploring their common characteristics and explaining this choice for my Artistic Project.
