Abstract The present work evaluates the environmental impact of synthesis gas and hydrogen production through water co-electrolysis with the aim of understanding the environmental impact that a synthesis gas project entails. Energy is still largely produced through fossil fuels, and in recent decades, the demand for energy has increased considerably, thereby also increasing the negative environmental impacts of energy production. With the aim of meeting international agreements related to the increase in global average temperature, there is an urgent need to seek more renewable energy sources that are not dependent on climatological factors. The production of green hydrogen and its subsequent transformation into synthesis gas has been a technology under development in recent years, allowing for the production and storage of renewable electric energy when it is produced in excess. Synthesis gas can then be utilized for energy to produce heat or electricity, or it can be injected into the natural gas grid. The environmental impact study conducted concludes that the project, although it produces negative impacts, is positive for the environment due to the need to seek alternative energy sources. This project also stands out for its use of liquefied biomass, produced from waste of forest and woodland cleaning, and for the production of purified water.
