Resumo(s)
Nanostructured foams (nanofoams) can be synthesised by one-step dynamic hydrogen bubble template (DHBT) electrodeposition as sustainable, high-performance, and competitive electrodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline electrolysis (AEL). This work shows the progressive integration of 0.5 to 33% of Cu content in a NiFe (∼50/50) framework to produce tri-metallic NiFeCu nanofoams with improved HER activity. The electrochemical HER activity of the nanofoams was studied by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), Tafel analysis and chronoamperometry (for longevity assessment). The morphology, composition, real surface area and crystalline structure of the nanofoams were characterised by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The NiFe nanofoam without Cu content exhibited overpotentials of −170 and −260 mV at −10 and −50 mA cm−2, respectively, while the Received 9th March 2026 Accepted 29th August 2026 DOI: 10.1039/d6ta02065h rsc.li/materials-a Introduction integration of Cu to produce the NiFeCu2.0 nanofoam resulted in improved overpotentials of −110 and −180 mV, respectively. After 60 h of continued chronoamperometric ageing, both the NiFe and NiFeCu2.0 electrodes exhibited robust longevity under harsh HER conditions, retaining 92% of the electrochemical activity when assessed by potentiodynamic LSV measurement, while the current during the chronoamperometry was approximately 60%. The difference between these two retention figures is thoroughly discussed in relation to resistive and mass-transport phenomena under the sustained hydrogen evolution.
