Abstract(s)
Abstract I – Teaching - The lecturers' activity, which is an inherent objective to this section, took place at Conservatório de Música da Metropolitana of AMEC | Metropolitana, in Lisboa. In the beginning this activity is characterized in terms of history, structure and pedagogical objectives. The study of the school population and its distribution was deeply approached, mathematically dissecting such distribution by different courses provided by the school, by students' age group and curriculum plan. Then, it was decided to choose for a descriptive characterization of the students included in the sample, under which the work was carried out, exposing both their musical levels as their curriculum and sociological situation. Students' perspectives and motivations were also analyzed and compared to the epistemological thinking approach. As regards the teaching-oriented part of the course, emphasis is substantially given to the metacognitive and intrinsic motivation levels of each students, as well as to the objectives, targets and strategies previously outlined in order to reach a better performance. The next chapter is related to the critical analysis of the lecturers' activity. Firstly, a methodological exposition of the work developed by the students in the first three school years is presented. For this purpose, a detailed approach for easily understand the students' curriculum is used. Secondly, it was decided to present an analytical review, thus approaching both the students' perspective and the lecturers' during the presentation and results of the applied pedagogy, demonstrating the effectiveness of the teaching methods chosen, as well as the openness and assimilation of these by the students. It was then possible to come to the conclusion, considering a sustained introspection, that the preparation of this report and actions underlying such report allowed for the revision and consistency of instructive concepts previously assimilated as well as the improvement of the attitude while lecturer. The self-assessment to the work developed had a leverage effect as regards the continuing improvement of the lecturer's role and the analysis capacity of each student, thus allowing for an individual analysis focused on the intellectual and psychomotor development features.
Abstract II – Research - The objective of the present study is to analyze study and describe the advantages and disadvantages of the four-mallets grips for tuned percussion used by the Portuguese. For the development of such research, there was the need to create an investigation model built on the basis of the professional experience of the researcher himself, considering the absence of theoretical models susceptible for the application of the study’s context. At a methodological level, the option was a cross-sectional study, that is, a descriptive and explanatory study. Therefore, it was prepared a questionnaire survey for indirectly collect the data needed. The study is focused on a non-probabilistic (unintentional) sample including thirty three Portuguese Percussion players/professors and corresponds to the fully completed and returned questionnaires. All Portuguese particular higher educational institutions, with graduate programs in Music - percussion area as the training offer - were requested to distribute the questionnaire by the students and former students in this area. The Data Management Protocol considered the specific objectives of the investigation with focus on the uni, bi and multi-varied descriptive analysis. Data collected were treated via Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17 and results demonstrated that respondents consider the domain of the three grips as very important - Stevens, Burton and Traditional. Majority of respondents agrees that the grips choice has varied over time. Other issue is related to the grip’s choice, influenced by the lecturer and by the first grip students have contact with, which, is usually the one adopted for daily performance. Results also demonstrated that drum players who dedicate themselves to the music teaching and who have a post-graduation or equivalent degree in Music or who are undergraduated, are those who attended a foreign teaching institution. Operational objectives were not completely achieved, because when defining the target population and, consequently, the sample, there were some constraints related to both the non-existing data pre-collection as regards direct observation and the non-existing direct control of delivery/collection of questionnaires.
