  • The shape of two-dimensional liquid bridges

    We have studied a single vertical, two-dimensional liquid bridge spanning the gap between two flat, horizontal solid substrates of given wettabilities. For this simple geometry, the Young–Laplace equation can be solved (quasi-)analytically to yield the equilibrium bridge shape under gravity. We establish the range of gap widths (as described by a Bond number Bo) for which the liquid bridge can exist, for given contact angles at the top and bottom substrates (θt c and θb c, respectively). In particular, we find that the absolute maximum span of a liquid bridge is four capillary lengths, for θb c = 180◦ and θt c = 0◦; whereas for θb c = 0◦ and θt c = 180◦ no bridge can form, for any substrate separation. We also obtain the minimum value of the cross-sectional area of such a liquid bridge, as well as the conditions for the existence and positions of any necks or bulges and inflection points on its surface. This generalises our earlier work in which the gap was assumed to be spanned by a liquid film of zero thickness connecting two menisci at the bottom and top substrates.

  • Three-player nim with podium rule

    If a combinatorial game involves more than two players, the problem of coalitions arises. To avoid the problem, Shuo-Yen Robert Li analyzed three-player NIM with the podium rule, that is, if a player cannot be last, he should try to be last but one. With that simplification, he proved that a disjunctive sum of NIM piles is a P-position if and only if the sum modulo 3 of the binary representations of the piles is equal to zero. In this paper, we extend the result in order to understand the complete characterization of the outcome classes, the possible reductions of the game forms, the equivalence classes under the equality of games and related canonical forms.

  • Acompanhamento de obra ferroviária: “Linha do Norte – substituição de travessas monobloco fissuradas, entre os Km 232.500 e 291.000 vias A e D”

    O presente relatório de estágio é um resumo detalhado do trabalho realizado numa empresa ferroviária, na qual houve oportunidade de acompanhar uma obra, que consistiu na substituição de travessas monobloco de betão, que se encontravam fissuradas. Este documento contempla a apresentação de conceitos teóricos de ferrovia, desde os tipos de via, passando pelos materiais constituintes, abordando igualmente a manutenção de via e tipos de manutenção. Complementarmente são apresentados alguns casos práticos acompanhados ao longo do estágio. A empreitada acompanhada localiza-se na Linha do Norte, no troço entre Pampilhosa (Km 232.500) e Válega (Km 291.000), na via Ascendente (VA) e na Via Descendente (VD). Este troço apresenta um elevado estado de degradação das travessas de betão monobloco. Para além do acompanhamento dos trabalhos da empreitada, também se fez um acompanhamento detalhado de dois trabalhos, essenciais ao futuro da via em termos de segurança, comodidade e prestação de um bom serviço para os utilizadores desta via, sendo eles: a regularização de barras, com a regularização de tensões e as respetivas soldaduras aluminotérmicas.
