- Bone scan index as metastatic bone disease quantifier and predictor of radium-223-dichloride biochemical responsePublication . Roque, Valentin; Jessop, Maryam; Pereira, Luisa; Gape, Paul; Dizdarevic, Sabina; Sousa, Eva; Carolino, ElisabeteThis work aims to assess whether the biochemical response of radium-223-dichloride treatment can be predicted based on the pretherapy bone scan, and consequently, if bone scan index (BSI) and maximum lesion intensity have a place as alternatives or as complements to extent of bone disease (EOBD) scoring in predicting biochemical response to treatment. Many cases of advanced prostate cancer have evidence of bone metastasis. Accurate EOBD quantification could help predict the response to radium-223-dichloride therapy. Current EOBD score is simple to use but does not consider size, intensity or localization of lesion BSI might be more suitable for stratification of bone metastases. Patients and methods: Bone scans (n=20) preceding radium-223-dichloride treatment for prostate cancer were assessed retrospectively using automated BSI software (EXINI) and by assessing maximum counts per lesion. Results were then compared to total alkaline phosphatase (ALP) as a measure of biochemical response to therapy using linear regressions and to their EOBD scores using box plot analysis. Results: Moderate correlation was found between ALP response and maximum lesion intensity (R2=0.41) and BSI (R2=0.46). A strong correlation (R2=0.71) was found between baseline ALP and BSI and between lesion number and BSI (R2=0.60). Visual assessment of EOBD score was found to correlate well with baseline ALP and maximum ALP response. Conclusion: BSI is a useful asset in the stratification of patients with metastatic bone disease. It may also have a place in the prediction of biochemical response.
- Clinical classification versus semiquantification with adapted reference values for 123I-FP-CIT SPECT in a nuclear medicine departmentPublication . Silva, Diana; Elias, Madalena; Queiroga, Margarida; Serrano, José; Rayo Madrid, Juan Ignacio; Carolino, Elisabete; Sousa, EvaSemi quantification (SQ) in DaTScan® studies is broadly used in clinic daily basis, however there is a suspicious about its discriminative capability, and concordance with the diagnostic classification performed by the physician. Aim: Evaluate the discriminate capability of an adapted database and reference's values of healthy controls for the Dopamine Transporters (DAT) with 123I–FP-IT named DBRV adapted to Nuclear Medicine Department's protocol and population of Infanta Cristina's Hospital, and its concordance with the physician classification.
- Comparison between 3D laser scanning and computed tomography on the modelling of head surfacePublication . Sousa, Eva; Vieira, Lina; Costa, D. M.; Costa, Durval C.; Parafita, R.; Loja, M. A.The measurement of people physical parameters and proportions constitutes an important field of science, the anthropometry since it is related to the characterization of the human size and constitution; it allows improving the design and sizing of systems and devices to human use. To enable these measurements, different direct and indirect methodologies may be used depending on the particular aim of a specific study and on the eventual availability of data sources that can be used also for this purpose. Because of this relevance, the present work intends to assess the influence of different acquisition and reconstruction methods in the modeling of a 3D head surface. In order to assess the significance of the differences between acquisition and reconstruction methods, a set of measurements between several anatomic references of a physical phantom were carried out. Statistical evaluation using the Friedman test for non-parametrical pared samples was considered. We found, so far, no statistically significant differences between the several methods considered for acquisition and reconstruction.

Objetivo do estudo - Criação e validação de bases de dados e valores de referência (VR) adaptados na SQ para diagnóstico de SP recorrendo ao de DaTScanTM, adaptados para o Hospital Infanta Cristina em Badajoz.
- Imaging in neurological and vascular brain diseases (SPECT and SPECT/CT)Publication . Lucena, Filipa; Sousa, Eva; Vaz, TâniaSince the first in vivo studies of cerebral function with radionuclides by Ingvar and Lassen, nuclear medicine (NM) brain applications have evolved dramatically, with marked improvements in both methods and tracers. Consequently it is now possible to assess not only cerebral blood flow and energy metabolism but also neurotransmission. Planar functional imaging was soon substituted by single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET); it now has limited application in brain imaging, being reserved for the assessment of brain death.

- Impact of the background Region of Interest in the relative renal functionPublication . Sousa, Eva; Raminhas Carapinha, Maria João; Vaz, Tânia; Lucena, Filipa; Vieira, Lina OliveiraRenal scintigraphy with 99mTc-dimercaptosuccinic acid (99mTc-DMSA) is performed with the aim of detect cortical abnormalities related to urinary tract infection and accurately quantify relative renal function (RRF). For this quantitative assessment Nuclear Medicine Technologist should draw regions of interest (ROI) around each kidney (KROI) and peri-renal background (BKG) ROI although controversy still exists about BKG-ROI. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of the normalization procedure, number and location of BKG-ROI on the RRF in 99mTc-DMSA scintigraphy.
- Implementation of a new reference values database for semiquantification in123I-FP-CIT brain single emission tomographyPublication . Queiroga, Margarida; Silva, Diana; Elias, Madalena; Serrano, José; Madrid, José; Carolino, Elisabete; Sousa, EvaBrain dopamine transporters imaging by Single Emission Tomography (SPECT) with 123I-FP-CIT (DaTScanTM) has become an important tool in the diagnosis and evaluation of Parkinson syndromes. This diagnostic method allows the visualization of a portion of the striatum – where healthy pattern resemble two symmetric commas - allowing the evaluation of dopamine presynaptic system, in which dopamine transporters are responsible for dopamine release into the synaptic cleft, and their reabsorption into the nigrostriatal nerve terminals, in order to be stored or degraded. In daily practice for assessment of DaTScan TM, it is common to rely only on visual assessment for diagnosis. However, this process is complex and subjective as it depends on the observer’s experience and it is associated with high variability intra and inter observer. Studies have shown that semiquantification can improve the diagnosis of Parkinson syndromes. For semiquantification, analysis methods of image segmentation using regions of interest (ROI) are necessary. ROIs are drawn, in specific - striatum - and in nonspecific – background – uptake areas. Subsequently, specific binding ratios are calculated. Low adherence of semiquantification for diagnosis of Parkinson syndromes is related, not only with the associated time spent, but also with the need of an adapted database of reference values for the population concerned, as well as, the examination of each service protocol. Studies have concluded, that this process increases the reproducibility of semiquantification. The aim of this investigation was to create and validate a database of healthy controls for Dopamine transporters with DaTScanTM named DBRV. The created database has been adapted to the Nuclear Medicine Department’s protocol, and the population of Infanta Cristina’s Hospital located in Badajoz, Spain.
