Abstract(s)
An inexpensive rectangular plate made of sheets of A4 paper is made to oscillate around an axis perpendicular to its own plane or parallel to its minor side. The plate is connected to a rotary motion sensor so that its angular position can be measured as a function of time. The data collected from experiments is compared with solutions of the equation of motion of the plate. Among others, the effect of the amplitude on the period of oscillation of the plate and the effect of different types of damping is studied. The experiments reported here are appropriate for undergraduate students taking a course in classical mechanics.
