Abstract(s)
Abstract: This paper examines the reading comprehension skills of 170 9thgrade Portuguese students. Half of these students are of African descent and the other half come from Portuguese families. All are from low-income families and attending the final year of compulsory education at Portuguese schools on the outskirts of Lisbon. Applying a part of the PISA 2000 test, results showed that the groups were not significantly different and that all subjects featured low levels of reading comprehension. From the results, it can be inferred that socioeconomic background is the most important issue regarding reading comprehension.
