  • Symmetries of the 2HDM: an invariant formulation and consequences
Publication . Ferreira, Pedro Miguel; Grzadkowski, B.; Ogreid, Odd Magne; Osland, P.
Symmetries of the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) potential that can be extended to the whole Lagrangian, i.e. the CP-symmetries CP1, CP2, CP3 and the Higgs-family symmetries Z(2), U(1) and SO(3) are discussed. Sufficient and necessary conditions in terms of constraints on masses and physical couplings for the potential to respect each of these symmetries are found. Each symmetry can be realized through several alternative cases, each case being a set of relations among physical parameters. We will show that some of those relations are invariant under the renormalization group, but others are not. The cases corresponding to each symmetry group are illustrated by analyzing the interplay between the potential and the vacuum expectation values.
  • CP in the dark
Publication . Azevedo, Duarte; Ferreira, Pedro Miguel; Muhlleitner, Milada; Patel, Shruti; Santos, Rui; Wittbrodt, Jonas
We build a model containing two scalar doublets and a scalar singlet with a specific discrete symmetry. After spontaneous symmetry breaking, the model has Standard Model-like phenomenology, as well as a hidden scalar sector which provides a viable dark matter candidate. We show that CP violation in the scalar sector occurs exclusively in the hidden sector, and consider possible experimental signatures of this CP violation. In particular, we study contribution to anomalous gauge couplings from the hidden scalars.
  • Wrong sign and symmetric limits and non-decoupling in 2HDMs
Publication . Ferreira, Pedro Miguel; Guedes, Renato; Sampaio, Marco O. P.; Santos, Rui
We analyse the possibility that, in two Higgs doublet models, one or more of the Higgs couplings to fermions or to gauge bosons change sign, relative to the respective Higgs Standard Model couplings. Possible sign changes in the coupling of a neutral scalar to charged ones are also discussed. These wrong signs can have important physical consequences, manifesting themselves in Higgs production via gluon fusion or Higgs decay into two gluons or into two photons. We consider all possible wrong sign scenarios, and also the symmetric limit, in all possible Yukawa implementations of the two Higgs doublet model, in two different possibilities: the observed Higgs boson is the lightest CP-even scalar, or the heaviest one. We also analyse thoroughly the impact of the currently available LHC data on such scenarios. With all 8 TeV data analysed, all wrong sign scenarios are allowed in all Yukawa types, even at the 1 sigma level. However, we will show that B-physics constraints are crucial in excluding the possibility of wrong sign scenarios in the case where tan beta is below 1. We will also discuss the future prospects for probing the wrong sign scenarios at the next LHC run. Finally we will present a scenario where the alignment limit could be excluded due to non-decoupling in the case where the heavy CP-even Higgs is the one discovered at the LHC.
  • One-loop charge-breaking minima in the two-Higgs doublet model
Publication . Ferreira, Pedro Miguel; Morrison, L. A.; Profumo, S.
We analyze the vacuum structure of the one-loop effective potential in the two Higgs doublet model. We find that electroweak-breaking vacua can coexist with charge breaking ones, contradicting a theorem valid at tree-level. We perform a numerical analysis of the model and supply explicit parameter values for which charge-breaking vacua can be the global minimum of the theory, and deeper than charge-preserving ones.
  • The hidden side of scalar-triplet models with spontaneous CP violation
Publication . Ferreira, Pedro Miguel; Gonçalves, B. L.; Joaquim, Filipe
Scalar triplet extensions of the Standard Model provide an interesting playground for the explanation of neutrino mass suppression through the type-II seesaw mechanism. Propelled by the possible connections with leptonic CP violation, we explore under which conditions spontaneous CP violation can arise in models with extra scalar triplets. The minimal model satisfying such conditions requires adding two such triplets to the SM field content. For this model, the scalar mass spectrum in both the CP-conserving and spontaneous CP-violating scenarios is studied. In the former case, a decoupling limit for the new scalars can be achieved, while this is not the case when CP is spontaneously broken. In particular, we show that the existence of two light neutral scalars with masses below a few tenths of GeVs is unavoidable in the CP-violating case. Using matrix theory theorems, we derive upper bounds for the masses of those light scalars and briefly examine whether they can still be experimentally viable. Other interesting features of the scalar mass spectrum are discussed as, e.g., the existence of relations among the charged and neutral scalar masses.
