Pereira, Adriano; Vieira, Carolina; Paulos, Inês; Marques, Maria; Stwart, Tamara; Ribeiro, EdnaA resistência a antimicrobianos é cada vez mais um desafio para a saúde humana a nível mundial, sendo a disseminada e vulgarizada utilização de antibióticos a principal responsável pelo desenvolvimento de estirpes bacterianas resistentes, como staphylococcus aureus resistente à meticilina (MRSA), responsável por numerosas internações, associadas a texas de mortalidade extremamente elevadas, com risco acrescido associado a indivíduos colonizados. Na indústria animal, os antibióticos são usados como promotores de crescimento, para tratamento profilático e para fins terapêuticos. Atualmente, os suínos são reconhecidos como um dos principais reservatórios de MRSA, com capacidade de transmissão para humanos. A colonização de suínos com MRSA representa assim um elevado risco de colonização nasofaríngea para os trabalhadores que passam várias horas por dia em contacto direto com animais positivos para MRSA. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a prevalência de colonização de estirpes S. aureus sensíveis e resistentes à meticilina em trabalhadores e animais de uma exploração suinícola portuguesa, como estudo de caso.

Ribeiro, Edna; Pereira, Adriano; Vieira, Carolina; Paulos, Inês; Marques, Maria; Swart, Tamara; Monteiro, A.Pigs are an important reservoir of livestock-associated bacteria, including methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which constitute a professional hazard for workers in direct contact with these animals with an increased risk of nasal colonization, potentially associated with subsequent clinical diseases and transference of the infection to others. Here we performed a bioburden characterization concerning bacterial prevalence and resistance (MRSA) in workers and animals from a Portuguese swine production as a case study. Air samples were collected through an impaction method. Biological samples were obtained through nasopharyngeal swab procedure. Identification of S. aureus was performed through immunologic tests. We report an exceedingly high prevalence of total bacteria and S.aureus colonization (100%) in workers and animals whereas all of the identified strains were MRSA. Additionally, air samples demonstrated high values of total bacterial concentration. This work raises awareness to the relevance of bioburden monitoring and the requirement to create occupational standards and take effective preventive measures.
