Resumo: The present research wants to study the possible empirical effects of independent directors in terms of banks’ outcomes. Our objective is to analyse the “quality” of independent directors considering aspects like experience, network, age/tenure and other relevant personal characteristics. Our research question derived from one of the main directions for future research on corporate governance in banks highlighted by John, De Masi, and Paci (2016). The previous authors argued that the empirical effect of independent directors on outcomes in banks is not well established. Therefore, it is suggested to analyse the “quality” of independent directors. This research involves all Portuguese banks operating in 2018. All available information of boards of directors is hand-collected from annual reports, interim reports and press releases in the period between 2013 and 2015.
