Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT - Introduction – Despite the reduction in incidence over the past decade, Cerebro-cardiovascular diseases continue to be the leading cause of death and permanent disability in Portugal. Several studies show the effectiveness of Aquatic Physiotherapy, particularly in improving balance, walking autonomy, and activities of daily life. Objective: to identify the effect of Aquatic Physiotherapy on balance, functionality, and quality of life in adult individuals with neurological pathology/stroke sequelae. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted using the PubMed and PEDro databases. Controlled and quasi-experimental studies without a time limit, written in Portuguese or English, and with methodological quality of ≥ 5 on the PEDro scale, were considered. Results - Thirteen articles were selected, encompassing a sample of 525 post-stroke adults subjected to Aquatic Physiotherapy (AP) and/or Land Physiotherapy (LP). Most of the outcome results in question showed a significant majority in the experimental groups (AP and/or LP) p< 0.01. Conclusions – This study indicates that AP combined with LP offers greater benefits to patients with stroke sequelae, although LP also shows improvements. It seems that Aquatic Physiotherapy improves balance and consequently functionality and quality of life.
