Postdramatic theatre productions as a stage for political statements: a critical analysis with case studies

Abstract

ABSTRACT - Productions of postdramatic theatre and their political statements are at the focus of this work. Through the aesthetic and conceptual opening, postdramatic theatre has enabled the theatrical world to find new approaches towards political statements. In this thesis, four different examples will be used to illustrate the paradigm shift in today's theatre. In addition, previous innovations in postdramatic theatre will be discussed and also examined with practical examples. The theoretical part of this thesis will explain where political theatre comes from, how the role of the spectator in particular has changed and what forms exist to create more political awareness through theatre. The main changes under postdramatic theatre are explained. These changes involve the way of acting, dramaturgy, aesthetics and the theatre as a place. In the analysis, the productions are examined regarding structure and outcome. The focus is on the means used by the respective production. The result is an enhanced image of the political in postdramatic theatre productions.

As produções de teatro pós-dramático e as suas expressões políticas estão no centro deste trabalho. Através da abertura estética e conceitual, o teatro pós-dramático permitiu ao mundo teatral encontrar novas abordagens para as declarações políticas. Nesta tese, quatro exemplos diferentes serão usados para ilustrar a mudança de paradigma no teatro de hoje. Além disso, inovações anteriores ao teatro pós-dramático serão discutidas e também examinadas com exemplos práticos. A parte teórica desta tese irá explicar de onde vem o teatro político, como o papel do espectador em particular mudou e que formas existem para criar mais consciência política através do teatro. São explicadas as principais mudanças no teatro pós-dramático. Estas mudanças envolvem a forma de atuar, a dramaturgia, a estética e o teatro como lugar. Nesta análise, as produções são examinadas em relação à estrutura e ao resultado. O foco está nos meios utilizados nas respectivas produções. O resultado é uma imagem mais ampla das expressões políticas nas produções teatrais pós-dramáticas.
