Paper presented at 1st Future of Magazine Conference (FoM), Lusófona University, Lisbon, Portugal.http://hdl.handle.net/10400.21/16824In this paper, we propose to show how the magazine Visão – a weekly magazine of general information created in 1993 – recovered, in its pages, the memory of the former President of the Council of Ministers, Oliveira Salazar, a dictator who ruled Portugal between 1932 and 1968. The inventory of pieces published about Salazar over the first ten years of the new millennium allows us to understand some dynamics of memorial construction, namely with regard to the recurrent use of photographs and portraits that evoke and recover some of the traits and events most emblematic of his regime. What are these events? At what moments, throughout the decade, was Salazar most "seen" and talked about? In what context do these images appear in the pieces? What do they show and what do they hide? To what extent did the magazine format enhance the exploration of the image – whether in photos or illustrations – as a fundamental element in the recovery of your memory? The potential of images in witnessing or in symbolic evocation obliges journalism to mobilize its founding values when it resorts to them. In the case of characters with the historical and political dimension of Oliveira Salazar, whose visuality was largely controlled by their government advertising services, it is important to understand what strategies journalism used to incorporate his image into the current discourse without neglecting his responsibility in the recovery of the memory of those times. The survey of the pieces published in this magazine allows us to identify, over the years, an inevitable use of archival images that emphasizes both the critical eye and the inability to overcome the limitations of access to the images themselves.engMemoryImagesMagazineSalazar in Visão Magazine: picturing memories throughout a decadeconference object
